What happened

The España arrived flying American colors, a sign of how weak Spain’s position had become after its war with the United States. Once the islands were sold to Germany the following month, the Spanish officials and soldiers on Pohnpei simply waited to be relieved; the German archive says the garrison, short of supplies, was glad to leave.
