Fr. Salesius Haas, the first German Capuchin, arrives; only seven Capuchins remain on Yap.
What happened
The Capuchin order began sending German friars because the new government wanted German taught as the common language. Fr. Salesius started German classes at Santa Cristina, mostly for Yapese being trained as policemen and for Chamorros on Yap. Illness sent him home about two years later, but he wrote a book on Yapese life during his stay.
