The Yap cable station opens.
What happened
The German–Netherlands Telegraph Company had laid the cable in 1904, linking Yap with Menado, Guam and Shanghai. The station gave Yap direct contact with the outside world, which Pohnpei, with no radio, still lacked in 1910.
Why it matters
Two years later the Catholic mission moved its headquarters to Yap because the new cable station let it communicate easily with the outside world.
