What happened

The number of registered Catholics on Yap was roughly half the figure at the turn of the century. The German priests blamed the lapses on their Spanish predecessors baptizing too readily, and began requiring long instruction before baptism. Fr. Daniel had led the Spanish mission on Yap for about 20 years.
