Salvator Walleser is consecrated bishop of the Carolines vicariate.
What happened
In 1911 the Carolines, rejoined with the Marianas in one church district, were raised to a vicariate. Walleser, a Capuchin who had spent six years in Palau, made Pohnpei his seat, and the new stone church in Kolonia, finished months later, became his cathedral.
Why it matters
By 1914 Pohnpei had about 1,500 Catholics, nearly a third of the island’s people.
