Jesuit Fr José M. Gumucio and Br Ramón Unamuno disembark on Yap.
What happened
The two Jesuits had been assigned to Chuuk but were switched to Yap after a chance conversation aboard ship. MicSem’s Yap history gives 14 March 1921; another MicSem page dates the Jesuit return to 1922. On Yap they found the German Capuchins’ residence damaged, and the Japanese governor soon gave them a government subsidy.
Why it matters
After 1925 Yap saw large numbers of conversions, with Yapese catechists leading much of the work.
