FSM History

Spanish Jesuit Fr José Pájaro and Br Florencio Mancera land on Tonoas (Dublon); MicSem dates the Jesuit return to 1922.

What happened

The Japanese navy had asked the Vatican for missionaries from a country neutral in the First World War, and the Pope assigned Spanish Jesuits. A group of 22 Spanish Jesuits led by Fr. Santiago López de Rego sailed out and was set down at several islands. The Jesuit conference gives 6 March 1921 for Tonoas; MicSem dates the Jesuit return to 1922, and the sources do not settle it.
