US Marine spy Earl Ellis, taken ill sailing from Kusaie, resumes surveying the Marshalls and Ponape.
What happened
Ellis, a US Marine intelligence officer, had written a war plan for amphibious operations in Micronesia that later shaped the American campaign of World War II. Traveling under cover, he was watched by a Japanese official on his voyages and was refused passage to Truk. He died in Palau in May 1923.
